Covenant Creatures decided, in our early days to “weigh in” on the issues surrounding the notorious “Pit Bull” (aka….Bully, Pitty, Pibble and Land Seal….due to their seal like vocalization 😊 ). Suffice it to say, our goal for hosting LAPD was to raise awareness of the wonderful aspects of such a misunderstood and maligned breed, as well as educate the public on the “Pibble” owner’s responsibility to be an educated (and therefore qualified) breed ambassador.
Attending an event dedicated to this breed type might be a new thing for some, but people return year after year and express the fact that they are so glad to be in a dog event where people weren’t afraid or paranoid because “THAT dog is Pit Bull!” Often, people who intend to just “stop in for a minute to see what’s happening”, stay for hours! There is truly a sense of community and appreciation.
Pit bulls have a better temperament than the average dog! The American Temperament Test Society gives credence to what pit bull activists have tried to prove for many years: that the pit bull is a gentle and loyal dog, and that the perception of them as violent or aggressive is the result of poor behavior on the part of humans and media hype. Their study showed that the average score for all dogs was 82% and the American pit bull terrier scored 86%. Yes, folks, our current day Pit Bull is a stable, sensitive and loyal canine friend and family member.
Pit bulls are renowned for their loyalty and strong bonds with their families. This loyalty is one of their defining traits and a key reason many people choose them as companions. Here are some aspects of their loyalty:
Pit bulls are incredibly affectionate and form deep attachments to their owners. They thrive on companionship and often seek to be close to their family members, whether through physical affection or simply being in the same room.
While they are generally friendly and social, pit bulls are naturally protective of their loved ones. This doesn’t mean they’re aggressive, but they will often stand between their family and potential threats, displaying courage and vigilance.
Pit bulls are highly eager to please their owners, which is a significant aspect of their loyalty. This makes them responsive to training and willing to go the extra mile to make their humans happy.
These dogs are highly attuned to their owners’ emotions. They often comfort their humans during times of distress, demonstrating their empathy and loyalty.
Pit bulls love being active with their families, whether playing games, hiking, or simply lounging together. Their loyalty shines in how they enjoy spending time with their people.
Despite their loving and loyal nature, pit bulls often suffer from stereotypes. With proper care, training, and socialization, they are among the most devoted and loving dog breeds.
To nurture a pit bull’s loyalty, ensure they receive consistent training, plenty of positive interaction, and a stable, loving environment. Pit type dogs were heroes (during WW11 they were America’s “Nanny Dogs”); today they are often portrayed as evil villains who should be banned from all of society — wow…from hero to villain within about 50 yrs – something is terribly wrong. In the words of animal rights advocate and author Gary L. Francione: “We got them into this mess; we have an obligation to help them out.” And so, we at Covenant Creatures: Companion Animal Program stand on behalf of our loyal friends and many, many clients…the Pit Bulls.
